This might sound stupid, but I don't know much about doctors because I've been avoiding them for almost 10 years now, because I'm scared of doctors,(Mock me if you must D: ) but I'm reaching the point when I just can't avoid anymore.

Family doctors are hard to find, but doctors in emergency clinics are doctors too, right? One has a fancy office and the other has a small crappy office, but they are both qualified doctors who both can help me find my health problem...right? Can I just go in a clinic and tell the doctor: I have this and this problem, can you tell me how to cure it?
I may have to get my blood tested too, but they do this in CLSCs, right? Will the emergency clinic call me to tell me my blood results, or do only family doctors do that?

Also, my mother has a family doctor. Will they allow me to take an appointment easily with him, since I'm family and I would assume that's what it means to be a family doctor?

Does anyone know where I could buy some NYE decorations? I'd like some fancy horns, hats, and glitter, but my local dollar store has already moved on to Valentine's Day decorations! Can anyone suggest where to look tomorrow (last minute, I know)--I'll only have time to search in the Plateau, so suggestions in that neighbourhood would be much appreciated!!

Thanks a million and happy, happy 2010!

Last week an element refused to turn off, so we had to pull the fuse. Yesterday, both oven elements died halfway through a batch of cookies. We officially NEED a new, full-sized (30") stove. The fridge is in nearly as dire a condition. I have $150 to spend, hopefully on both.
Luckily, we've got a pickup, so can collect without having to worry abut delivery fees, but still!

Anyone have suggestions of where I might be able to find something that was manufactured within this decade & that price range? I've been searching all over kijiji, craigslist & lespac.com today, but no luck on anything that fits my prerequisites...

Thanks in advance!

We went on a little Gutstrings tour over the winter holidays, we played two out of three shows with our new bass player who we met in our Jazz ensemble class at school. The third show was really last minute, the promoter emailed us on christmas asking if we could play Kingston the following day. We were ready to go, but Mr. Bass player was not ready to leave his plans.

At the show in Montreal, we had live actors, dancing and being hillarious. The audience couldn't figure out if they were part of the show or if they were audience members., which was what they were supposed to think. It worked out amasingly.

The show in Ottawa was a blast, we headlined a little cafe, and besides the fact that there were too many tables in the cafe taking up all the room, it was a really fun show.

The show in Kingston on the 26th was also fun, except the kingston crowd took a few songs to warm up to us. I wouldn't blame them, since we didn't have a bass player, our first song was Todd playing some dancy beats while I read exerpts from Hemmingways "the sun also rises". Too bad we didn't record that show, it was pretty funny.

The kitchen of the house we stayed at in Kingston only had one kitchen utensil... a deep fryer. I woke up to the smell of oil being boiled, as someone was making pre-made fries in a deep fryer. ???

Hey Montreal,
I'm a Torontonian heading out to your fine city (which I love) for NYE. My best friend and travel companion unfortunately has some other obligations and it's looking like I will actually be alone for the actual "New Years" portion of the night...

So now I'm trying to find something to do for the night! Something ideal for me to do would be something like an indie rock/electropop etc sort of a concert. I'm into Handsome Furs, Junior Boys, and even folk like Iron and Wine or DeVotchKa. And before this thing came up we were planning to go to Korova to go dancing. Any suggestions along these lines? Or anything else fun happening, I'm welcoming ideas, as long as it's cheap and no-frills (I'm not really a clubbing kinda girl), and safe for a young girl.

Thanks in advance!

I'm one of those kids with a foreign name that's hard to pronounce who has pretty much always gone by an English name, although my birth name is still the legal one. I'd like to change that, and I've found the official website of le directeur de l'état civil and printed the preliminary analysis form and everything. I'm still a minor until next December, but I'd really rather have this done by the time I go back to school in fall. So, does anyone have any experience in the matter and can tell me if it's a long and arduous process, if my reasons are considered valid, if my request will be treated differently whether my parents apply for me as a minor or if I apply as a legal adult? Thanks!

Hello All,

I am moving from Alaska to Montreal (our flight leaves the night of 30 December), but I am having a heck of a time finding any company that will move "irregular" sized things such as bikes, mattresses, long boxes, etc. For the normal U-Haul boxes it looks like we will probably be using Fed Ex, but they won't take our other items. We also called many many companies such as Carlile, Lynden, and Mayflower to try to move everything together, but the lowest price we could get was a little over 3,000 dollars with Mayflower, and that is way beyond our budget (the other companies wouldn't even do our move with household goods). Has anyone else ever done a US/Canada move such as this? What did you do? I would hate to have to leave so many items behind just because they cannot fit into regular moving boxes.

Thank you!

What's your favourite Bubble Tea place in Montreal?

I am looking for one that serves "real juices" not just powders they add to tea.

I usually go to Magic Idea in Chinatown but am looking for other options, preferably in the Village or Plateau areas.

ps: i really, really don't recommend Yoy's bubble tea on St-Denis/Mont-Royal :(

Is there a place downtown that makes delicious macaroni and cheese? I am in the mood for it but I don't do kraft dinner and I really don't feel like making it myself. Making a roux is no fun. Are there restaurants that even sell this comfort food as a main dish?

Also to the LJ user who offered to teach me to needle felt, I totally lost your comment in my e-mail inbox. I didn't forget about you and I'm still pretty interested in learning to needle felt. If you read this, let me know if you still want to teach me :)

i'm about at my wits END with CIBC and their fees and limits and overall shitty service! i've had nothing but problems with them since i opened my account with them in the summer.

i apologize if this isn't entirely appropriate for the community, but i was hoping to get some opinions.
who do you bank with?
i'm looking for a no fee, or low fee, bank to get a chequing account with. i have a visa with CIBC that is maxed out, but i expect to have it payed off in the coming months, at which point i want to switch banks entirely, cancelling that visa and closing my chequing account at CIBC.
i've heard good things about BMO and Scotia, but i'm leaning more towards a credit union, and would like personal experiences.
I'll be a student in the fall, so for now, student accounts are out of the question, but i would like to deal with a bank that offers student accounts (as they are usually no fee) so that i can switch to one when i become a student.
can anyone help me out here?
thanks in advance for anything you guys can give me!

The results of the poll on what to lj-cut or not are in! Well, they've been in for a while, but I kept forgetting to post about them!

First of all, about 93% of people agreed commercial posts should be lj-cut. Therefore, this rule will not change.
What will very slightly change is what is considered commercial.
The majority of voters have decided that posts where people are trying to sell something for profit are to be lj-cut, as before. The slight change will be that a post where someone is attempting to publicize a product, whether for profit, or not will also need to be lj-cut.

I'll be changing the community rules shortly to reflect this.

Happy Holidays!

Hello Montréal!

First of all I'd like to wish everyone Marry Xmas and Happy New Year (ou Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année)!!! Smiles to everyone on frequent basis!

Actually as we have just moved to Canada (and precisely Montréal, Lachine). I'd like to ask if anyone knows - is it possible to find somewhere bee wax to buy? Any ideas? I would be really grateful if you provide the names of the shops or places so I could find it later.

Thank you very much beforehand!

Hello beautifuls
Earlier I posted this sale right before I moved
http://community.livejournal.com/montreal/3498338.html

Well, I've since moved and I now have no room for these shoes! I'm offering them ALL for $50. All of them (except for the dark brown boots that sold). That's hundreds of dollars worth of never worn shoes for less than the price of one new pair.

Any takers? I'll even deliver :)

Hello Montreal. I have three questions to ask you (triple-banger!)

1. Cheap paint. I have just moved here and would like to paint but am on a tight budget. I hear Renaissance sells paint. I'm going to be trying all the hardware stores and asking them if they have mismatched paint, so I'm looking for a specific suggestion. The rooms can all be different colours, quantity is not an issue!

2.  Where is a trustworthy place to get an XBox fixed? The warranty has run out and they charge $130 (Red Ring of Death) for repairs. ;[

3.  Job hunting. I know to check with services such as YES and check online (Craigslist and Kijiji), but aside from up and down St. Catherine or St. Denis, where are some good places to walk to look for jobs? I do speak French and live near Metro Beaudry for reference, but it doesn't have to be near there.

Thanks a lot, sorry for asking so many questions!

If you are looking for a Little Black Dress try Reitmans.  The one in Place Ville Marie had quite a few (in about 8 styles) and they are all under $30.  Also, there is the *nicest* saleslady there.  I wish I'd gotten her name.

If you are like me and on the rubenesque side don't despair-- the XL is equivalent to about a 14.

Happy holidays!
